Voice given, voices guided
Fifth- and sixth-grade boys packed the front half of Messiah Lutheran Church’s pews to sing in Latin and Swahili. Alex Underwood was at the chancel, balanced on one leg or springing on the balls of his feet or pacing between the halves of his choir, meanwhile signaling with his hands, joining in tenor or falsetto, and snapping his fingers clearly over 70 or so pre-adolescent voices.
