Jessica Patterson’s grandfather served in the Navy during World War 2. Starting when she was about 10, he would take her to Elmwood Cemetery, where at least scores of veterans were buried, on Memorial Day.

Girls win track and field regional
The Smoky Valley girls track and field team won the Kansas State High School Activities Association Regional Championship at Pomona on May 22 and will send 16 athletes to the state meet at Wichita State University this week. Kaden Bishop from the boys team will also go.

Auditor gives city's books a clean bill of health
The accountant hired for an annual audit of the city praised staff members’ bookkeeping to the City Council at its meeting Monday night. Danielle Hollingshead, lead auditor with Adams Brown, said that for one paving job worth more than $100,000 last year, the city should have required the contractor to carry a performance bond, a sort of insurance.

Newspaper will become more like a magazine
CherryRoad Media publisher Jeremy Gulban visited the McPherson Sentinel on May 13 and said the News-Record is among CherryRoad newspapers that will go from being printed as a broadsheet on newsprint to digital production on brighter paper the size of a magazine. Photo reproduction, especially color, will be superior, but the projected 12 pages in the new format will have about two-thirds of the space provided by eight pages of the current broadsheet – which three years ago was more than 10 percent wider than it is now.
