Gallant’s lawyer needs more time before trial The trial of Emile Gallant on federal drug and gun charges was delayed for a second time so his public defender can go over prosecution evidence that has been added to twice since the first delay, in March. Gallant is now scheduled for trial on July 29 in Wichita.

Payments to lift farm income in 2025
TOPEKA — Kansas farm income in 2025 is expected to be among the strongest in the last 20 years, bolstered by $2 billion in government payments for depressed crop prices and weather conditions, an agricultural economics specialist said.

Pioneers and cottonwoods
When the Kansas legislature selected a state tree it chose the native cottonwood because its presence was synonymous with homestead success. The fast-growing trees require adequate moisture to grow, so a standing grove indicated crops were likely to succeed as well."It might honestly be said that the successful growth of the cottonwood grove on the homestead was often the determining factor in the decision of the homesteader to stick it out until he could prove up on his claim," legislators reasoned in 1937.
