SALLIE SUE LUCAS
GREENSBORO, NC Sallie Sue Lucas, 86, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, on August 13, 2024.
Sue was born Sallie Sue Knox on July 27, 1938, in Spearville, Kansas, to Ben and Hattie Knox.
After graduating high school in 1955, Sue traveled to Emporia, KS, to attend Newman Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in Wichita until moving to Lindsborg, KS, to take a nursing position in 1966. Sue worked with emergency, obstetrics, surgery, and pediatric patients before becoming the head of the nursing staff. She was instrumental in developing the cardiac care unit at the hospital. In 1990, Sue continued her nursing career in the surgery department at Salina Hospital until her retirement.
Sue loved to travel and was an avid reader, especially of history and mysteries. She enjoyed researching her family’s ancestry, which can be traced back to the Mayflower. Her faith guided her throughout her life. Attending church and reading her Bible brought her peace in difficult times.
After retirement, she moved to Norman, OK, to be near her son Mark and his family until 2010. Then, she moved to Greensboro, NC, where her son David and daughter Bobbi live.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Hattie Knox; her infant brother, James Lester Knox; and her former husband, Robert (Bob) Lucas.
Sue is survived by her three children, David (Greensboro, NC), Bobbi (Greensboro, NC), Mark, and wife Jeanne Lucas (Junction City, KS). 4 grandchildren, Eric Lucas (Cary, NC), Ben Lucas (Durham, NC), Matt Lucas (Lindsborg, KS), and Jake Lucas (Minneapolis, MN): Sister, Bennita Butts (Towanda, PA), 2 Nieces, 2 Nephews, and 1 Cousin.
Her family will bury her ashes at the Silent Land Cemetery in Spearville, KS, on Sunday, Oct. 19th, 2025.
The family invites you to celebrate her life on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Community Room of The Cottages, 404 W. State Street in Lindsborg.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lindsborg Community Health Care Foundation, care of Lindsborg Community Hospital, 605 W. Lincoln St., Lindsborg, Kansas.
