ACCOMMODATION: The sidewalk along Main at Olsson makes way for a cottonwood with a trunk diameter at breast height of about 4 feet. The eastern cottonwood is the state tree of Kansas and of Nebraska but a Kansas Forest Service survey found just 21 of them along the streets and in the parks of Lindsborg. The service said cottonwoods can grow as much as 8 feet per year but are plagued by several insect and disease pests, and it recommended keeping trees vigorous with plenty of soil moisture.
