Five exhibitions open at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on Sunday and continue through Oct. 19: “Practical In Her Art: Women Artists of the 1930s”; paintings by Karen Matheis of Lawrence, prints by Juana Estrada Hernandez of Providence, R.I.; mixed media works by Harley Elliott of Salina; and Swedish art from the Sandzén’s permanent collection.
A retrospective exhibition of art by John Whitfield will run Aug. 1-31 at the Smoky Valley Arts & Folklife Center, 114½ S.
Four new exhibitions open at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on Sunday and continue through July 20. They feature a large-works invitational, mixed-media pieces by Rodney Wood of Hoisington, watercolors by Mark Grosserode of Tulsa, Okla., and acrylic paintings by Virgil Penner of North Newton.
Sally Johnson welcomed questions about her paintings, which she calls colorist and magical realism. Asked to explain the terms, and recurrent motifs such as spheres, she would say, “I don’t know.” Then she’d have a go at it.
