Marla Elmquist has a green skirt and jacket based on the clothes from where her father’s ancestors lived, in Sweden, more than a century ago. They are at once dressy, classic, and pre-polyester practical.

Denver-based Genevieve Waller will be artist in residence from June 13–26 at the Red Barn Studio Museum. Waller blends history and queer stories for sculpture, installation, and photography without a camera.

Four new exhibitions open at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on Sunday and continue through July 20. They feature a large-works invitational, mixed-media pieces by Rodney Wood of Hoisington, watercolors by Mark Grosserode of Tulsa, Okla., and acrylic paintings by Virgil Penner of North Newton.


The ubiquitous image of a farm includes a red barn, which historically took that shade because iron oxide, or rust, was added to the linseed oil to prevent mold and fungus. It also added the red hue that became synonymous with barns.
