Newspaper will become more like a magazine

CherryRoad Media publisher Jeremy Gulban visited the McPherson Sentinel on May 13 and said the News-Record is among CherryRoad newspapers that will go from being printed as a broadsheet on newsprint to digital production on brighter paper the size of a magazine. Photo reproduction, especially color, will be superior, but the projected 12 pages in the new format will have about two-thirds of the space provided by eight pages of the current broadsheet – which three years ago was more than 10 percent wider than it is now.

State colleges seek tuition hikes

TOPEKA — Administrators of public universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system proposed student tuition increases for undergraduate resident students in the upcoming academic year ranging from 2.5% at Pittsburg State University to 4% at Fort Hays State University. The outlier was Emporia State University, which responded to steady enrollment declines by requesting no increase in tuition for the second consecutive year.

City Council begins long-term capital spending plan

Lindsborg’s City Council members and staff members began the months-long process of budgeting for next year and planning how to make capital improvements over the next five years, which included the possibilities of a $7 million recreation center, a $500,000 golf course clubhouse, $400,000 to replace the Sundstrom Conference Center’s heating and air conditioning, and $100,000 to make the front desk at City Hall easier for use by people with disabilities and protect employees from angry visitors. The numbers presented by staff at a four-hour meeting April 28 at the Sundstrom are estimates for projects that might be years in the making, and not all of which can be funded.
