Voice given, voices guided

Fifth- and sixth-grade boys packed the front half of Messiah Lutheran Church’s pews to sing in Latin and Swahili. Alex Underwood was at the chancel, balanced on one leg or springing on the balls of his feet or pacing between the halves of his choir, meanwhile signaling with his hands, joining in tenor or falsetto, and snapping his fingers clearly over 70 or so pre-adolescent voices.

Saying goodbye to Jesus

A friend of mine said he was saying goodbye to Jesus, because he had come to believe that Jesus stood for everything “woke.” The Sermon on the Mount was a case in point. There Jesus praises the peacemakers, urges people to love and not hate, and to forgive instead of giving retribution.

The pull of tractors

Annika Ernstrom did not grow up farming, but at high school in San Luis Obispo, Calif., she joined the FFA, which once stood for Future Farmers of America. Although the city of San Luis Obispo is a tourist destination, San Luis Obispo County has a $1 billion agriculture industry.

Sandzén annual exhibition includes prints and graphic arts

Four new shows comprise the 127th annual Midwest Art Exhibition at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery from Sunday through April 20. They are “Rearview Mirror,” a retrospective by McPherson painter Wayne Conyers; “Enigma,” paintings by Brian Hinkle of Wichita; selections from the Society of American Graphic Artists annual exhibition; and prints from the gallery’s permanent collection.
