Advancing rural mental health

Born and raised on a farm in Northwest Kansas, I've seen firsthand the challenges the agricultural community faces. My parents had to fight to keep our farm, and I saw the mental and emotional toll these challenges placed on our family.Years later, I took a job as a therapist in a rural community just miles from my parents' farm.

Pioneers and cottonwoods

When the Kansas legislature selected a state tree it chose the native cottonwood because its presence was synonymous with homestead success. The fast-growing trees require adequate moisture to grow, so a standing grove indicated crops were likely to succeed as well."It might honestly be said that the successful growth of the cottonwood grove on the homestead was often the determining factor in the decision of the homesteader to stick it out until he could prove up on his claim," legislators reasoned in 1937.

Careful what you wish for

The front-page story about housing in McPherson County presents an argument for more homes to serve workers of industries that want to grow, and the claim that without growth a community will wither. I won’t say that more homes aren’t needed in this county.
