At the state high school track and field championship at Wichita State University on Friday and Saturday, Smoky Valley High School’s two podium finishers were Esther Clark and Trista Spitler, who each competed in four events and each placed third in one of them. Clark ran 11:37.64 in the 3,200-meter race and Spitler hit 36 feet 11.25 inches in the triple jump.
The Smoky Valley girls track and field team won the Kansas State High School Activities Association Regional Championship at Pomona on May 22 and will send 16 athletes to the state meet at Wichita State University this week. Kaden Bishop from the boys team will also go.
For the seventh year in a row, the Viking girls won the Central Kansas League track and field meet, which was held May 15 in Nickerson. The boys placed seventh among nine teams.

The tennis team placed third at the Kansas State High School Activities Association regional meet Friday and Saturday at Wichita Collegiate High School. The Vikings’ four doubles players will go to state.
Rylie Tolle hit three home runs to help Smoky Valley softball win in Nickerson 14-1 and 10-6 on Monday. The first game went four and half innings, after the Vikings scored four runs in the first inning, five in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth, with the Lady Panthers managing just one run in the third.
At their home event, the Smoky Valley Invitational, the Vikings tennis team equaled Buhler High School for most points, but the visitors took the tie breaker because they won at both singles and doubles. The six players from the Lindsborg school had been more consistent, with a second-place finish, two fifth places, and a sixth place.
Scott Bontz News-Record At the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference track and field championship, held Friday and Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Bethany’s Kort Sjogren won the men’s javelin event, with a throw of 59.37 meters, and Dylan Brice won the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.55 meters. (Sjogren was also honored as an outstanding student and spoke at the Bethany commencement ceremony Saturday afternoon.) There were no team results listed in the meet results shown on milesplit.com.
